Scale armour

Scale armour is among the oldest forms of armor and can be found in numerous cultures from the Bronze Age to the late Roman period. This type of armor consists of small metal plates that overlap each other, creating a flexible yet impressively strong protective layer. At Celtic WebMerchant, you will find an extensive range of scale armors and lamellar armors, based on historical findings from Europe, the Near East, and Central Asia. Our collection includes both accurate reconstructions of Roman lorica squamata and early medieval lamellar armor from Scandinavia and the steppe tribe tradition.

In the classical world, the scale armour was popular among soldiers who needed protection that was both light and flexible. Roman legionaries, cavalrymen, signifers, and even emperors were depicted in tunics of metal scales. The overlapping rows made the armor particularly effective against cutting and chopping weapons, while the flexibility kept it comfortable to wear during long campaigns. Also in regions s such as Anatolia, Cyprus, and the Levant, sets of scales are frequently uncovered, indicating widespread use and international trade.

Lamellar Armor

Lamellar armor, recognizable by plates that are laced directly to each other without a backing, was especially popular among steppe peoples such as the Scythians and later with Vikings and early medieval warriors. In our webshop, you will find various variants based on archaeological finds from Visby, Birka, and Byzantine spheres of influence. These armors move smoothly with the body and are ideal for reenactment, LARP, or museum presentations.

Celtic WebMerchant offers models from among others Deepeeka, Epic Armoury, and handmade armor pieces, ranging from affordable entry-level models to high-quality historical replicas s. Perfect for those seeking authentic protection for medieval events, living history, or decorative purposes.
