The hoplite is the citizen-soldier of the ancient Greek city-states. In our assortment, we have Greek armor from Deepeeka. This brand specializes in ancient equipment and bases all armor on museum pieces. For chest protection, hoplites wore a musculata or a thorax. The thorax is a bell-shaped chest and back protector with archaic decorations. The musculata protects the chest and back and is made to resemble the idealized male body. Under the musculata, one wore a leather apron. One also wore greaves.
In our assortment, you will find all the equipment for a Roman legionary, cavalryman, or general. The musculata protects the chest and back and shows a muscular torso. In battle, simple leather or steel versions were used. Emperors are depicted with a highly decorated musculata on classical Roman sculptures. The subarmalis is comparable to a gambeson and was worn under armor. The lorica segmentata is most associated with Roman legionaries. It consists of metal strips and protected shoulders, back, abdomen, chest, and hips.
Typical for gladiator equipment are the galerus and the manica. The manica is an arm protection consisting of a fabric base and steel or leather plates. Over this, the retiarius wore a galerus: a shield-shaped shoulder protector. Both manica and galerus were worn on only one arm for optimal freedom of movement. With the galerus, the retiarius could protect his head from the opponent's blows.
