All about Sallet helmets

The sallet, also called sallet helmet, sallet, celata, or schaller. It was one of the most well-known Medieval helmets. This 15th century helmet is an Italian development from the bascinet. The helmet was particularly popular in North-West Europe and Hungary. Various types of sallets were made, ranging from tournament helmets worn by knights during tournaments to simple celeta’s without visors worn by infantrymen. The sallet was often mass-produced and used for the armament of the first professional armies that emerged in the 15th century.

Sallet & bevor: what to consider

Not every sallet has a neck guard or a flip-up visor. Historically, most examples did not have these because they were more expensive. For reenactment and LARP purposes, it is advisable to wear a sallet with a flip-up visor. This is more comfortable if you wear the helmet for a long time. Often, you can combine the sallet with the bevor. Most bevors with a flat raised edge fit most sallets. Even sallets without visors could sometimes be combined with a bevor, and some 15th century bevors even have their own visor.
