Product description

This sallet is modeled after an example from 1460. Today, the original is part of the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Coventry, England. The sallet was a very popular helmet because it offered good protection while maintaining a relatively wide field of vision.

By the mid-15th century, a regional variant of the sallet emerged in England and the Low Countries, known as the “English-Burgundian style.” Fully armored soldiers typically wore it with a bevor, providing facial protection and a front view comparable to the German sallet.

However, it was more rounded in shape and had a less pronounced rear extension. In many ways, this type of sallet was intermediate between the German and Italian styles. Salles made in France also closely resembled this style. Nevertheless, helmets in these styles could be produced in different regions. For example, this sallet was made around 1460 in the Burgundian style but was crafted in Milan, likely commissioned by an English aristocrat during the Wars of the Roses.

This sallet can be combined with a bevor in the following ways:

  1. Sallet half on the head, providing an optimal field of vision.

  2. Sallet half on the head with bevor closed, giving optimal visibility with extra facial protection.

  3. Sallet flat on the head with visor open, allowing a clear field of vision and making it easier to issue commands during battle.

  4. Sallet flat on the head with visor open and bevor closed, offering slightly more facial protection than with visor alone.

  5. Sallet flat on the head with visor closed, providing maximum protection for the head and face.

This helmet is made of 2 mm thick steel and features a leather liner. The visor can be lifted. The sallet is available in sizes M (maximum head circumference 61 cm) and L (maximum head circumference 64 cm), and weighs approximately 3.7 kg.
