Product description

The trammel hook was a common tool in medieval kitchens and remained in use as a kettle hook until the 19th century. This small hook is entirely hand-forged based on medieval models and features seven teeth, which allow for adjusting the height of the kettle above the fire, an essential function when cooking over an open flame. Trammel hooks have been indispensable in kitchens since Roman times and continued to play an important role in cooking throughout the Middle Ages. They are still perfect for reenactments and LARPing when cooking over an open fire.

The small medieval trammel hook measures 28 x 7.5 cm and can extend up to 39 cm. It is an essential tool for medieval cooking and was widely used in both the kitchen and hearth. In medieval times, the trammel hook also had a symbolic role in legal matters, such as when a house was sold. The lord of the manor would remove the trammel hook from the fire and hand it over to the buyer as part of the transfer of property.

Trammel hooks also had cultural significance, with the custom of gifting a beautifully crafted fire saw to a bride on her wedding day. This gesture symbolized the transfer of responsibility for the kitchen and hearth to the bride. In heraldry, trammel hooks are frequently depicted on coats of arms, underscoring their importance as a symbol of fire and hearth, central elements of medieval life.
