Alemannic bird fibula, bronze

Product description

This fibula is made after a 6th-7th century Germanic original. The original is nowadays part of the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Fibulae like this were worn all over Europe between the 5th and 7th century. They were worn by Germanic tribes like the Alemannnic people and the Franks, but also by the Merovingians and the Anglo-Saxons. This fibula was excavated from an Alemannic female grave. Presumably these fibulae were worn in sets of two. It is enameled with red glass.
