Product description

This Viking buckle is based on motives in two Viking art styles from the 9th-10th century. It is suitable for belt straps with a width of 3 cm and it measures 4,5 x 4,5 cm. It is bronze coloured.

The decoration on this buckle shows a mask-like animal head en face with two large eyes at the centre of the buckle and its two gripping hands. This is the Borre style gripping-beast decoration. But this buckle also shows an overlap with the Jellinge style that followed the Borre style: a ribbon-animal like motive that fills the whole surface of the buckle.

Historical examples of a combination of these two styles can be found in i.a. the Vårby hoard and the Gnëzdovo hoard.
