The word cignus is Latin for 'swan'. The term cignus is used by archaeologists for a type of spoon that is often made of bronze and whose handle is shaped like a swan's neck. These types of spoons are mainly found in excavations of fourth and fifth century Roman hoards. Examples of finds of the cignus are the Thetford Hoard and the Hoxne Hoard. The Hoxne Hoard in Suffolk is the largest find of late Roman silver and gold ever excavated in England.
This cignus is a great asset for collectors of late Roman replicas, re-enactors and museums.
