Product description
This cuirass is based on the famous late 14th-century armor from the collection of Churburg Castle (Castel Coira). Armor components in this style were used throughout Europe from the late 14th to the early 15th century. This type of armor clearly represents a transition between the early 14th-century coat of plates and the fully developed plate armor. Plate armor was originally designed as reinforcement for a hauberk with separate plates, but with the Churburg style it became the main element of body protection.
The cuirass was often combined with bascinets, such as the pig-snout bascinet or the klappvisier bascinet, although the kettle hat also remained popular. During this period, knights typically wore full arm and leg protection and preferred hourglass gauntlets or demi-gauntlets. Under armor of this type, a chainmail haubergeon was commonly worn. The V-shaped plates on the chest provided additional defense against upward strikes toward the face.
The cuirass consists of nine steel plates, fastened together with leather straps, and decorated with brass bands. This replica is made from 1.6 mm thick steel, suitable for a chest circumference of 105–126 cm, and weighs approximately 6.0 kg.
