Product description

This saber is based on the original, designed by Major General John Gaspard Le Marchant. It was the cavalry sword of the 1796 pattern based on swords of Central and Eastern European hussars. This saber was used by the British light cavalry. As a young captain, he noticed the awkward design of the heavy, overly long swords of the 1788 pattern. Le Marchant felt that the "knives of the Turks, Mamluks, Moors and Hungarians (were better) than any other." He gave the blade of this saber a distinctive curve, making it more agile in cavalry attack methods, and designed it with a widened point that affected balance and made slashing much more brutal. It was mainly awarded to British light dragoons and hussars and was also used by the light cavalry of the Royal German Legion during the Napoleonic Wars. The blade profile became so popular that Prussia and other German states imitated its design during the 19th century. This saber is delivered including a reproduced steel scabbard.
