Product description
This cuirass is based on the S18 cuirass from the Churburg Armory. The original was made between 1370 and 1410, likely in Milan, and belonged to the Von Matsch family.
This type of cuirass is crafted in the Milanese style. Cuirasses in this style were produced from the early 15th century and can be seen in examples such as the famous Avant armor. This style was worn throughout Europe and was therefore not region-specific. Milanese armor is characterized by large, rounded, and unadorned plates. Common helmets worn with it included the sallet, armet, and barbute.
A full chainmail haubergeon was worn under Milanese armor. While Milanese armor components were often worn as a complete suit of armor, individual pieces were sometimes used separately. The faulds of this cuirass (the lamellar plates at the bottom) are attached with leather straps and are removable. The V-shaped plates on the chest provide additional protection against upward strikes aimed at the face.
The cuirass is made of 1.6 mm thick steel and features four segments. It fits a maximum chest circumference of 120 cm, including gambeson.
