The buff coat is derived from the simple leather vest (jerkin) worn by hunters and soldiers during the Tudor period, which in turn evolved from the padded arming doublet worn under armor. The buff coat was used as a European military garment from around 1600 until the 1680s. They were usually worn under cuirasses and provided protection against cutting weapons such as rapiers and sabres. Most buff coats had sleeves, but some were sleeveless.
This buff coat is made of 1.4–1.6 mm brown suede leather and can be fastened at the front with leather laces. It is ideal for 17th-century costumes, such as the Dutch Golden Age, musketeers, pirates, and other characters. It is available in sizes S to XXL — see the image for measurements.
