Product description
Greaves were worn over chainmail chausses and provided an additional layer of protection for the lower legs of mounted knights. The development of greaves progressed alongside the heater shield or knight’s shield, which replaced the older, taller kite shields that extended higher to protect the rider’s leg. Heavy shields were cumbersome in battle, making the combination of greaves with the heater shield a major innovation.
These steel greaves are designed in the same style as other Balthasar armor pieces. They can be worn comfortably over trousers or gambeson leg armor. The lower legs, along with the forearms, are among the most vulnerable areas during reenactments and LARP battles.
