Product description

This Viking axe is based on early medieval originals and on examples seen in series such as Vikings and The Last Kingdom. During the early Middle Ages, axes were indispensable tools — used as weapons, for chopping firewood, and for repairs and daily tasks.

This type of axe head is classified as Petersen Type B. It features a distinctive bearded blade, with an extended lower edge. Axes of this kind are often found in contexts related to warfare. They were produced between approximately 800 and 900 AD, though possibly as early as the 7th century. The “beard” — the downward extension of the blade — provided a larger cutting edge without adding extra weight. This design also allowed the user to grip the haft just behind the head for planing or wood shaping. In combat, the beard offered tactical advantages: it could be used to hook or pull away an opponent’s shield or weapon.

This axe features a hand-forged finish and a wooden handle decorated with various runic symbols. Both the shaft and axe head are adorned with leather bindings. A perfect accessory for Viking reenactments or Viking costumes.
