This hood is based on originals from the late Middle Ages, as depicted in various illuminated manuscripts. It ends in a long tail, also known as a liripipe. The hood was mainly worn by the lower classes of society and was a practical head covering that protected against the cold and other weather conditions while working in the fields and similar activities. However, wealthy people also wore hoods, which were more richly decorated and made in colors such as blue and red.
