Product description

This type of battle axe is based on originals that were developed from the second half of the 15th century onward. Like its predecessors, the characteristic “Viking axes,” the blade of this axe extends into a beard. The distinctive angles of the beard could be used to parry enemy weapons, and the beard itself could also be used to pull cavalrymen from their saddles. This axe features a decorative cross motif, which also helps to reduce its weight. Battle axes like this one have a curved blade edge, making them lighter than ordinary woodcutting axes. The shaft is reinforced with metal strips, called langets, to protect it from damage. Axes of this kind remained in use until the end of the 16th century.

A beautiful axe by Windlass Steelcrafts. The large axe head with cross motif is securely fastened to the shaft with nails. The grip is wrapped in black leather, providing a comfortable hold. All metal parts have a patinated finish, giving the axe an authentic antique appearance. The axe is made of semi-sharp 1065 high carbon steel, tempered to a hardness of 48–52 HRC. It comes with a leather sheath. When the edge is blunted, it can be safely used for reenactment battles.
