Product description

This seax is based on originals made on the British Isles around the 9th to 11th centuries. This type of sax is mainly found on the British Isles and in Ireland, though some examples were also used in Scandinavia and Germany. Saxes like this were used both as weapons and as cutting tools in daily life. They may also have played a ritual role in sacrificial offerings.

The Viking seax, as the name suggests, originates from the Viking Age. It is also known as the “Broken Back Seax,” due to the shape of its blade. The grip immediately draws attention; it is made of bone and decorated with Old Norse motifs. The ends of the grip are finished with brass fittings. The scabbard features a brass ring for threading a cord through (cord not included).

The Viking god Odin, or the Germanic god Wodan, was the deity of the aristocracy and warrior class. Odin/Wodan is associated with all-knowing wisdom, mastery of runes and poetry, and control over seidr (magic). He is known as a god of war and death, but his deeper role lies in maintaining the cosmic order. According to mythology, Odin/Wodan was the first of kings and master over the Einherjar, the heroic fallen warriors of Valhalla who ride out with him to defeat Ragnarok (total chaos). Objects depicting Odin/Wodan can be linked to the aristocracy and warrior class—the Viking Jarls and Karls—and to magical practices.
