Product description

This Viking battle axe is based on historical originals. Axes like this were used both in warfare and as tools. This axe is ideal for early medieval living history and is fully functional.

The blade is classified as Petersen Type B. It features the characteristic “beard” shape, with a pronounced lower extension. Axes of this type are often found in contexts associated with warfare. They were made between approximately 800 and 900 AD, but possibly as early as the beginning of the 7th century. The “beard”—the downward-extending part of the blade—provided a larger cutting surface without increasing the weight of the axe. This design allowed the user to grip the haft just behind the head for woodworking tasks. In combat, the beard was also advantageous, for example to hook, pull, or deflect an opponent’s shield or weapon.

The blade is made from high-quality 1060 carbon steel, tempered to 50–55 HRC. If needed, the haft can be easily removed and replaced with a longer one, allowing this axe to also be used as a Danish-style axe.

Runes were letters that also carried magical power. They were engraved on objects to give the bearer strength and protection. Runes could also be used for divination and prophecy through the practice of volvas.
