Product description

This type of axe head is classified as Petersen Type F. The blade resembles that of Type E but is more symmetrical, and the curvature of the beard extends further back toward the haft. Axes of this type were likely designed for woodworking and were highly suitable for that purpose. They were used from around 900 to 975 AD. The “beard” — the downward extension of the blade — provided a larger cutting surface without making the axe heavier. This design allowed the user to grip the haft just behind the head for carving or woodworking. In combat, the beard also offered advantages, such as hooking or pulling away an opponent’s shield or weapon.

This Viking axe is based on several historical originals. Axes like this were used throughout the Viking world. The haft of this axe is wrapped in leather for extra grip.
