Product description
This type of axe blade is classified as a Petersen Type M, better known as the famous “Dane axe.” The blade features a broad, very thin-forged, wedge-shaped cutting edge that flares outward, often with projecting lugs on either side of the eye (yoke-like protrusions). The head is relatively light due to the thin steel, yet large in surface area. This is the classic Dane axe, which appears in larger numbers from around 950 AD. It was used by elite warriors, such as huscarls, and was specifically suited for attacking cavalry and breaking shield walls. Type M heads have been found across Scandinavia, England, and Eastern Europe. Axes like these remained in use even into the 12th century and were used in the Middle Ages as sparth axes by the Gaelic peoples of the Irish Sea region.
The axe was an indispensable and versatile tool for the Vikings, whether it was used to fell trees, build ships, houses, and furniture, or as a weapon in combat. The shape and size of the axe heads were adapted to their intended use. Some axes were beautifully decorated and served as status symbols, often buried alongside their owner. Today, Viking axes are highly prized collectibles and frequently appear in films, TV series, and video games, reinforcing the image of the fierce and fearless Vikings. This Viking axe features a hand-forged blade made of high-quality carbon steel and a sturdy ash wood handle. The axe head is further decorated with engravings of a historical Viking motif, and the axe is wrapped in leather. It makes an excellent gift or addition to a Viking outfit!
