During the 10th century AD the Saxon king Aethelred (the unready) paid the Vikings a sum of money provided that they would not raid his country anymore. This money is known as Danegeld. But this did not prevent the Vikings to invade England in 1013 led by Sweyn Forkbead, king of Denmark. After an undecided campaign, the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings agreed that a part of England, known as the Danelaw, would remain in Danish hands. Sweyn set his son Cnut to reign over this part of the Viking empire.
This coin is a reproduction of the pennies that were minted in York (Jorvik). It is dedicated to St. Peter, patron saint of York.
