Product description
This Viking axe is a replica of a 10th-century original found in Mammen, Denmark. The original is now part of the collection at the National Museum (Nationalmuseet) in Copenhagen. The axe was discovered in a male burial, likely that of a Viking chieftain or a very wealthy Viking. This axe is decorated in the Mammen style — a Viking art style that actually takes its name from this very axe! On the original, the engravings were inlaid with silver.
This type of axe head is classified as Petersen type H. The haft socket is slender, and the blade is asymmetrical, with the lower part curving more sharply toward the socket. This type of axe was likely designed specifically for warfare and was in use from approximately 900 to 975 AD.
