How do I best maintain my chainmail?
Depending on the type steel, a chainmail shirt requires more or less maintenance. Galvanized or stainless steel requires much less maintenance than regular steel, but regular steel is the most authentic material to use.
Degreasing
The first step in maintaining chainmail is degreasing the rings. With a soft cloth, you can wipe away a large part of the grease, but not all. To remove the remaining grease, you can use turpentine. Let the chainmail shirt dry thoroughly.
Oiling
If you plan to wear it immediately, you can leave the chainmail shirt as it is. If you want to store the chainmail shirt, you must oil it before storing. For this, you can use mineral or vegetable oil or WD-40.
A regular steel chainmail shirt should be degreased before each use and oiled after each use to prevent rusting.
