Viking leg wrappings, of Winingas, are an indispensable part of any Viking outfit. Leg wrappings were worn on the lower leg, over the trousers. The main function of these leg wrappings is a guess, as they seem to have been multifunctional. They kept the legs warm, protected the legs during daily activities, and prevented wide trouser legs from becoming an obstacle.

Leg wrappings can be a bit confusing at first, but once you know how to put them on properly, it's really not that difficult.

How to put on Viking leg wrappings?

You start with wrapping from your foot and work your way up. Some leg wrappings have a straight end and a pointed end. If this is the case, the straight end goes around the foot. Keep the main length of the wrap on the outside of your foot. Place the end of the wrap under your foot and ensure you have enough length to go underneath and over it. The end of the wrap should be tucked under the main length, on the outside of your foot.

Move the main length of the wrap diagonally over your foot to the inside of the ankle. Make sure it is pulled tightly against your foot so that the end stays in place and the whole does not become too thick. From this point, continue wrapping the fabric around your leg, while slowly moving higher along your leg. Initially, it will be tricky to figure out how much to overlap each rotation to end up in the right place, but this will become easier as you wear them more frequently.

The pointed end (or another straight end if both ends are straight) should come out on the outside of your leg, just below the knee. Some leg wrappings have a hook at the point to secure the end to the wrap. If your wrap does not have a hook, you can secure it with a small fibula, or tuck it under itself like a bandage.
