Product description

This bascinet is based on an original from around 1370. From about 1330, some bascinets were equipped with a hinged visor (klappvisier). Helmets like this had a visor with a hinge point in the center of the helmet bowl. This type of helmet was particularly popular in the Holy Roman Empire and remained in use there even into the 15th century.

Klappvisiers were found throughout Europe. In Northern Italy, they are depicted in a Crucifixion scene in the chapter hall of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, circa 1367. Their use appears to have disappeared in Italy around 1380. This bascinet features riveted rings at the lower edge, to which an aventail, or camail, can be attached. A padded gambeson collar was often worn beneath the camail for comfort and additional protection against impacts.

This helmet has an internal diameter of 72 cm (excluding the leather lining) and fits most head circumferences of approximately 58–61 cm. It includes a lining and chin strap. If you wish to wear extra padding, measure your head circumference while wearing it. The padding already included inside the helmet is usually sufficient. To create more space inside the helmet, the lining can be removed.
