Product description

The first recorded mention of a bascinet dates back to 1281 in the Italian city of Padua, where it is described as being worn by infantry. It is believed that the bascinet developed from a simple iron skull cap, which was worn together with a chainmail coif, either as the only form of head protection or underneath a larger helmet.

This bascinet is based on an early type that was used throughout Europe in the mid-14th century. The helmet has no visor, providing an optimal field of vision. Helmets of this type remained in use well into the 15th century. The sides of the bascinet slope slightly, and the back of the helmet tapers to a subtle point — a feature that became more pronounced in later bascinets.

This helmet is suitable for a head circumference of 63–64 cm.
