Product description
This helmet is a replica of a late 14th-century bascinet that forms part of the Churburg armor. Today, the original is housed in the collection of Churburg Castle.
Around 1380, a new type of bascinet emerged featuring a distinctive visor. This style is commonly known as the houndskull or pig-faced bascinet. The houndskull bascinet not only provided excellent facial protection, but the pointed shape of the visor also helped deflect blows away from the face. In addition, it improved ventilation, as the larger surface area allowed for more breathing holes through which air could circulate. This type of bascinet developed around 1380 and remained in use well into the 15th century.
This houndskull bascinet features a pointed visor designed to deflect strikes to the face. The visor is fitted with ventilation holes and offers a good field of vision. Like the original, the helmet is decorated with brass fittings. It is suitable for head circumferences up to 61 cm.
