Product description

Around 1380, a type of bascinet with a distinctive visor was developed. This style is commonly known as the houndskull or pig-faced bascinet. The houndskull bascinet not only provided excellent protection, but the pointed shape of the visor also deflected blows away from the face. Additionally, it improved ventilation, as the larger surface area allowed for more holes through which air could flow.

This bascinet is a replica of a pig-faced bascinet likely made between 1360 and 1390. Today, it forms part of the collection of Churburg Castle, along with the matching armor. Helmets of this type were used throughout Europe from the second half of the 14th century to the first half of the 15th century. They were worn during the Hundred Years’ War between England and France, as well as in the numerous conflicts taking place in northern and central Italy during this period. The pig-faced visor is highly effective because it directs strikes aimed at the face to the sides.

This battle-ready model is made of 2 mm steel and features a textile helmet liner. The visor can be removed with pins, converting the helmet into an open bascinet that provides an optimal field of vision. Like the original, the pig-faced visor has ventilation holes on one side. The helmet is decorated with brass strips. At the lower edge, it has vervelles to which a chainmail collar (camail) can be attached. A padded gambeson collar was often worn beneath the camail for comfort and additional protection against impacts.
