Product description
This type of early pot helm appeared from the first half of the 13th century. It evolved from the nasal helm (calotte) and offered better protection for the entire head. This type of helmet was usually worn in combination with a chainmail coif. Helmets like this were worn by the European aristocracy and knightly class and are depicted in various manuscripts and seals. They remained in use until the late 13th century.
This helmet is based on an original shown on a fully armed crusader in the Westminster Psalter from the mid-13th century. Another original can be seen on a statue at Olite Cathedral, also dating to the mid-13th century.
Other depictions of similar original helmets from the mid-13th to early 14th century appear in the Codex Manesse, the Maciejowski Bible, and the Cantigas.
The helmet is 1.6 mm thick and suitable for reenactment. The Gregory Crusader Helm is carefully designed and generously sized, allowing a padded coif to be worn comfortably underneath. It impresses with fine brass fittings and decorative rivets.
