Product description

This sallet is a replica of an original German-style helmet dating from around 1490. Sallets like this one emerged between 1450 and 1460 and were worn throughout Europe—particularly in Germany, where they became immensely popular, even among the aristocracy. They were often produced quickly and in large numbers, meaning that most sallets were not as finely finished as this more luxurious example. The visor of this sallet is crafted in the art of the late Gothic period, and the neck guard consists of multiple lames to allow greater freedom of movement. This deluxe sallet also features a liftable visor.

The German sallet may have resulted from a blend of influences from the Italian sallet and the German kettle hats with wide brims and visors that were used in the first half of the 15th century. Sallets of this kind were typically worn together with a bevor, but sometimes with a gorget—or even without additional neck protection. The sallet can be worn in five different ways, with or without a bevor:

  1. Sallet worn halfway back on the head: provides an optimal field of vision.

  2. Sallet halfway back with the bevor closed: offers an optimal field of vision with extra facial protection.

  3. Sallet fully on the head with the visor open: ensures maximum visibility and allows the wearer to issue commands easily during battle.

  4. Sallet fully on the head with visor open and bevor closed: provides slightly more visibility than with the visor closed.

  5. Sallet fully on the head with visor closed: offers maximum protection for the head and face.
