Product description
This stunning Viking sword is a replica of a find dating from the mid-10th to early 11th century AD, classified as Type X according to Petersen’s Viking sword typology, featuring a small D-shaped pommel. A comparable original was discovered in Leppäaho, Finland.
A notable feature of the original sword, now part of the Musée de l’Armée collection in Paris, France, is the engraved inscriptions on the blade. On one side is the famous ULFBERHT inscription, attributed to a Rhineland smith and considered one of the first “brands” for swords. Across Europe and as far as West Russia, roughly 170 swords from the 9th to 11th centuries have been found with the characteristic +VLFBERHT+ or +VLFBERH+T inscription. On the other side, the blade bears the inscription DUNA + DUNA XX, a possible abbreviation whose exact meaning remains unknown.
This replica features a straight, double-edged blade with a semi-sharp edge. As on the original, one side of the broad fuller bears the inscription VLFBERH+T, while the other side reads DUNA + DUNA XX. The hilt consists of a short, rounded steel crossguard and a wooden grip wrapped in brown leather, ending in a semi-circular steel pommel. The sword comes with a brown wooden and leather scabbard decorated with steel fittings and a wooden belt loop suitable for straps up to 5 cm wide.
