Product description

This falchion can be classified as type 1c in the Elmslie typology. It is characterized by its notched tip and flattened back. This type of blade is especially known for its appearance in the Maciejowski Bible, where it can be seen on plate 21, titled The Rescue of Lot. In medieval manuscripts, falchions were often depicted in the hands of villainous figures, although the reason for this is unknown.

These specific blades were often mounted on a “knife-like” handle, which could be either straight or curved. Elmslie sometimes described these blades as “proto-messer,” because their construction resembles a knife more than a sword. There are indications that these weapons may be related to Northern Italian forms of tools/weapons, possibly referred to as Falcastro.

The single-edged blade is broad and flat, while the two-handed grip provides a huge advantage in leverage, delivering significant striking power. Handmade from high-carbon steel by Windlass Steelcrafts®, with wooden scales on the grip and antique-finished copper fittings. This single-edged falchion is hand-forged from 1065 high-carbon steel.
