The Grosses Messer, or large knife, was used primarily in Germany between the 14th and 16th centuries. Because it was a relatively inexpensive sword, it was mostly wielded by people from the lower social classes, who also used it in their daily lives.
According to the Elmslie typology, this messer can be classified as a Type 4b. Weapons of this type were mainly used during the late 15th to early 16th century.
The slightly curved blade is hand-forged from carbon steel, and the hilt is made of wood. The Grosses Messer measures 101 cm in total length, with a blade length of 75 cm and a maximum width of 4.3 cm. Including the supplied scabbard, it weighs approximately 1.6 kg. The blade is made from 9260 carbon steel.
