The grosses Messer, or great knife, was used primarily in Germany between the 14th and 16th centuries. Being a relatively inexpensive sword, it was mostly wielded by commoners and also served everyday purposes.
This messer is classified as type 3d according to the Elmslie typology. Weapons in this category were mainly used in the 15th century and are characterized by the short “claw” shape at the tip of the blade. Messers of this length were very popular as combat weapons and were often used by the famous Landsknechte.
This version of a grosses Messer is hand-forged from 1055 carbon steel and is razor-sharp. The cross-guard and pommel are made of blued steel, and the grip is made of rosewood. The blade is secured to the pommel via a full tang construction. The sword comes with a wooden scabbard covered in black leather.
This sword is 107.5 cm long, with a blade of 81 cm, a cross-guard of 26 cm, and weighs 1,740 grams.
