Product description
This bascinet is based on an original from around 1370. From approximately 1330, some bascinets were fitted with a hinged visor. Helmets like this had a visor with a pivot point at the center of the helmet bowl. This type of helmet was especially popular in the Holy Roman Empire and remained in use there well into the 15th century. Hinged visors appeared throughout Europe. In northern Italy, they are depicted in a Crucifixion scene in the chapter house of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, around 1367. Their use in Italy seems to have disappeared around 1380.
This bascinet has a lower edge equipped with rivet holes for attaching an aventail, or camail. A padded arming collar was often worn under the camail to prevent irritation and provide extra protection against impacts.
This bascinet comes with an aventail made of butted round rings. For historical reenactment, you can optionally replace it with a fully riveted aventail.
