Product description

New from Red Dragon (known for their high-quality HEMA synthetic training swords) is this line of high-level historical replica swords. These swords come with a leather scabbard and are made from high-quality steel with excellent hardness.

The Kriegsmesser (War Knife) or Grosse Messer (Great Knife) from the late medieval period was a weapon primarily used by soldiers during the many wars that characterized this era. Several surviving examples can be found in museums and armory collections. The styles vary from straight, narrow blades to larger, curved swords with blades that can be quite wide near the point. The knives can have various tip shapes, from clipped points to long, narrow tapered blades with a heavy cross-section. The key feature of all examples is the scale-style grip, usually fastened with rivets and equipped with a butt plate or cap as a pommel. Many examples feature a nagel (side post or shell) at the center of the guard, though some also have side rings or other hilt elements such as knuckle-bows.

This sword is based on original Kriegsmesser. According to the Elmslie classification, this messer can be classified as a type 4b, a type of weapon primarily used during the late 15th to early 16th century.

It has a wooden scabbard wrapped in brown leather with a brown wooden grip. The edge is razor-sharp, and the sword is suitable for cutting tests. The blade is tempered and made of EN42J spring steel. It has a core hardness of 45 HRC, and the edge has a hardness of 50 HRC. Due to the two different hardness levels, the sword is flexible and less brittle than comparable models. This sword is a combination of excellent craftsmanship and years of HEMA experience.
