Product description

This type of great helm, or calotte, emerged in the second half of the 12th century from the nasal helm. It offered more facial protection than the nasal helm. In this early type, the shapes of a nasal helm with a rounded helmet bowl can still be clearly seen. Helmets like this were worn by the European aristocracy during the time of the Second Crusade and remained in use until the first half of the 13th century. These great helms were worn in combination with a chainmail coif and a hauberk. Medieval helmets like this are regularly depicted on monuments, such as in churches.
