Product description
This type of great helm emerged from the nasal helm in the second half of the 12th century. The great helm provided full-face protection. The visor features eye and ventilation openings. This type of helmet was usually worn in combination with a chainmail hauberk and chainmail coif. Helmets like these remained in use until the first half of the 13th century.
Great helms or calottes like this were worn by knights during the Crusades. This was the type of helmet worn by the Templars. This great helm features a leather rim, and sometimes the entire helmet was painted.
