Product description

This ornamental disc, featuring snake depictions, was widely used by the Alemanni during the Early Middle Ages, from 500 to 700 AD. In the Merovingian period, such discs were an essential part of women’s attire within Alemannic culture. The disc is crafted from bronze, with a contrasting central part.

The Alemannic disc pendant has a diameter of 4.8 cm. This piece draws inspiration from the serpent, which has long been a significant figure in mythology and the performing arts within the Germanic world, dating back to the Bronze Age. The serpent symbolized both the return of life in spring and death in winter, closely tied to ancient fertility rites.

The serpent also had a notable role in death rituals, as seen in figures like Nidhöggr, the serpent associated with the World Tree, and the Midgard Serpent, which encircles the world. This mythological creature is found in various cultures, from Germanic and Indo-European mythologies to Siberian shamanism, symbolizing deep cultural and spiritual significance across different civilizations.
