Product description

This type of calotte developed from the nasal helmet in the second half of the 12th century. The calotte provided protection for the entire face. The visor was fitted with viewing and ventilation holes. These helmets were usually worn in combination with a chaimail hauberk and a chainmail coif. Helmets of this type remained in use until the first half of the 13th century.

This Norman calotte is a replica of medieval originals depicted in manuscripts and frescoes. The calotte was very popular throughout Europe (and in the Holy Land). It offered optimal protection for the head and face. Helmets like this were worn by knightly orders such as the Templars. Later, this type of helmet evolved into the great helm or pot helm, which also protected the neck.
