Product description
This bascinet is a replica of a Milanese bascinet made between 1390 and 1410. The original forge is unknown. Today, the helmet is part of The Wallace Collection in London.
Around 1380, a type of bascinet with a distinctive visor emerged. This style is often called the “houndskull” or “pig-faced” bascinet. The pointed shape of the visor not only provided protection but also deflected blows aimed at the face. In addition, it improved ventilation, as the larger surface allowed for more holes through which air could flow. This type of bascinet remained in use throughout the 15th century.
The lower edge of this bascinet features vervelles to which an aventail, or camail, can be attached. A padded collar was often worn beneath the camail for comfort and extra protection against impacts.
This is a battle-ready bascinet, hand-forged from 2 mm thick steel. It has a detachable visor and is constructed from two welded pieces. A leather liner provides additional comfort.
The bascinet is available in sizes S, M, and L. Size S fits head circumferences up to 61 cm, size M up to 61 cm, and size L up to 64 cm.
