This matres statue is made after a 2nd century original excavated in Gaul. Nowadays it is part of the collection of Museé d'Argentomagnus in France.
The Matres (Latin `Mothers`) were goddesses who were worshipped in North and West Europe from the 1st to 5th century AD. They are usually depicted per three on votive stones and altars. Half of the divine names are Celtic, and the other half is Germanic. They were also worshipped in regions of Germania, East Gaul and North Italy.
This statue is handmade of alabaster and its height is 15 cm. Presumably these small statues were also painted so they appeared lifelike.
