This sgian Dubh is made of several layers of Damascus steel. The name sgian dubh means ?black knife?. This dagger was usually worn in the sleeve during the 17th and 18th century. An old custom was that a Highlander could not carry weapons inside when he entered a house. For self-defense he often hid a sgian dubh in his sock. When a fight broke out in the house he could escape or fight back with his dagger. After Culloden the soldiers of the Blackwatch regiment always wore this dagger in their sock.
