Product description
The first recorded mention of a bascinet dates back to 1281 in the Italian city of Padua, where it is described as being worn by infantry. It is believed that the bascinet developed from a simple iron skullcap, which was worn together with a chainmail coif, either as the only form of head protection or underneath a larger helmet.
This bascinet is based on late 14th-century examples. At the lower edge, it features riveted rings to which a chainmail collar, or camail, is attached. The camail protects the neck and was often equipped with a padded collar (gambeson collar). The mail is made from spring steel flat rings, round rivets, 8 mm and woven in a 1-in-4 pattern. The helmet is available in sizes M and L and includes a textile lining. This helmet is designed with re-enactment combat in mind.
