Product description
This spangenhelm is of the nasal helmet type. Helmets like this were used throughout Europe from the 9th century onwards and remained in use at least until shortly after 1066. Around this time, they are depicted on both Norman and Anglo-Saxon warriors in the famous Bayeux Tapestry. Such helmets were worn by Vikings as well as other Germanic peoples. Over time, this type of spangenhelm evolved into the well-known nasal helmet.
Unlike later nasal helmets, spangenhelms were originally constructed from multiple pieces joined together with “spangen” (metal bands). This was a more economical production technique introduced during the Late Roman period. The nasal piece provides protection for the entire face while still allowing an optimal field of vision. An additional advantage was that these spangenhelms could be repaired during campaigns.
A superb helmet for Viking reenactment, this spangenhelm is inspired by those worn by the Vikings. It features cheek guards, an evolution of Roman helmet design, and a nasal piece that protects the face without obstructing vision.
A perfect helmet for Viking LARP. This spangenhelm is inspired by the helmets that the Vikings wore. The helmet has cheek flaps, a development from Roman helmets. The helmet has a nasal piece that provided protection to the entire face without hindering the field of view.
