Product description

This Viking helmet is based on historical originals of the spangenhelm, one of the most popular types of helmets in the Early Middle Ages. It is of the nasal helmet type. Helmets like this were used throughout Europe from the 9th century onwards and remained in use at least until shortly after 1066, around the time they are depicted on both Norman and Anglo-Saxon warriors in the famous Bayeux Tapestry. Helmets of this type were used by the Vikings as well as by other Germanic peoples.

From this type of spangenhelm eventually developed the well-known nasal helmet. Unlike later nasal helmets, early spangenhelms were originally made of multiple parts connected with spangen. This was a cheaper production method introduced during the Late Roman period. The nasal guard provides protection for the entire face while maintaining an optimal field of vision. Another advantage was that these spangenhelms could be repaired during campaigns.

This helmet features a conical bowl, with the nasal guard attached separately to the lower spang. This construction technique was very popular in the Early Middle Ages, and this type of helmet was likely one of the most common.

The helmet is made of 1 mm thick steel, making it ideal for LARP, cosplay, or theatrical use. This spangenhelm includes a nasal guard that provides protection for the face.
