Product description
This sword is based on an original from the late 10th to early 11th century AD. The hilt was discovered in Korsgården Anses, Hedmark, Norway, and is classified as a Petersen Type T. The blade of this Viking sword was found in Skoven, Norway, inside a cave, with no trace of the original pommel. For that reason, the University of Oslo reconstructed the sword in the 20th century, following a historical Viking tradition in which sword parts were often reassembled. The small lobes on the sides of the pommel resemble stylized animal motifs, reflecting the animistic beliefs of the Vikings, who viewed their swords as living, spiritual entities, each possessing its own power and essence. The original hilt was adorned with silver fittings, showing that its owner belonged to the wealthiest Jarls of the Viking world.
Strength was of great importance to the Vikings. In the early Middle Ages, they raided monasteries and wealthy settlements, but they were also farmers and opportunists, surviving in harsh northern conditions. Through conquest and trade, they amassed great wealth and founded Viking kingdoms. One of the most famous kings was Harald Fairhair of Norway. As Norway grew stronger, many chieftains who opposed the new centralized rule—with its taxes and royal authority—were exiled to Iceland, the Shetlands, and other new Viking territories. Eventually, more Vikings seeking freedom and fortune migrated to Iceland.
A luxurious Viking sword like this replica would have been fit for a king such as Harald Fairhair.
