Mix & Match Viking trousers Dublin: bard, pirate, wanderer

Middeleeuwse broek

Sometimes certain items we sell are presented as Viking, Medieval, or Pirate. For some items, this is based on their actual history, for others on a specific character they are often associated with. However, this does not mean that these items cannot be used for different looks or characters.

In this blog, we want to show you three totally different looks, all with the same trousers, the Viking trousers Dublin.

Viking trousers Dublin Look 1 - Bard

The first look we show you is perhaps the least expected character linked to a pair of Viking pants: a bard. However, with the right additional clothing pieces, accessories, and props, almost anything is possible.

The trousers in this look is, of course, the Viking pants Dublin in brown. These trousers are wide around the thighs and narrower around the lower legs. This silhouette was also used in other time periods and is common in various fantasy characters. This makes it a versatile item to have.

We have combined the trousers with a broken white shirt, which has light ruffles around the neck and wrists. This type of shirt became common in the Renaissance and some time thereafter. They are generally associated with characters like nobles, pirates, but also bards!

In our Renaissance clothes category, you can find more of this kind of shirt.

Layered over the shirt we have a woolen doublet. Adding a doublet is an easy way to make a character look a bit taller, more noble, and proper. Bards were poets and musicians, so you can certainly dress them up a bit more.

You can find more doublets in the Renaissance clothing category.

As shoes we gave our bard a pair of suede boots. These boots are not too luxurious, but this fits very well with this look. Bards may have a higher status than peasants, but they are still not nobility.

On top of the doublet, our bard wears a simple leather belt with a nice large pouch. A case is a necessity to keep your money and other valuables safe. These smaller accessories are a great way to really bring a character to life.

As a small nod to the bard's musical background, we have also added a bell to the belt.

A bard never knows when inspiration will strike. By having the bard carry a book and a quill, you can also get to know the poet and musician side of the character.

One of the best ways to truly complete a bard look is by adding a musical instrument. We have given our bard a drum, but other musical instruments are also a wonderful option.

(A nice little touch to add to a bard look could be a hairpin. It's not a necessity, but if you want something extra's, a beret could suit the character well.

Look 2 - Pirate

The second look we created with the Dublin-trousers is a pirate look. Pirate outfits are always very fun to make because you can go in many different directions. From pirate captain to simple pirate sailor. For this look, we chose a pirate captain look, but if you leave out the beautiful coat, the rest of the look would also be a great basic for a more simple pirate look.

The trousers in this look is again the Viking trousers Dublin in brown. As mentioned with the bard look, these trousers have a silhouette that fits many looks. Pirate costumes often have slightly loose-fitting trousers with high boots over them. The wider upper part of these trousers gives a similar effect.

The most common depiction of pirates usually shows them wearing shirts, often with fluttering sleeves. For our pirate, we have chosen a shirt with some extra details on the sleeves. This way, the look gets a bit more attention if you decide to take off the coat at some point.

We offer more pirate shirts in our pirate clothing category.

Over the shirt, we layer a vest, also known as gambeson or gilet. In popular media, pirate looks are often based on clothing from the 17th and 18th centuries. In men's clothing of that time, a vest was part of most men's outfits, including sailors. The vest adds a touch of colour to the look and ensures once again that the look still works if you decide to take off the coat.

Another garment that was common in the 17th and 18th centuries was a type of coat called the justaucorps. Eventually, this coat was also introduced to the navy and found its way into pirate costumes. Such a coat would be a luxury item, which is why they are often seen as a pirate captain's coat and not something a simple pirate would wear.

High leather boots were also considered a luxury item at the time. This is why high boots are a great way to add status to the look of a pirate captain. A sailor would likely have worn slip-on shoes instead. The leather boots we have selected are folded down at the top to enhance the pirate feel.

To dress up this outfit a bit more, we have added a wide belt with a large, decorated buckle. As an extra detail, we have hung a money pouch on this belt.

In modern pirate films and series, pirates wear their swords on a belt that goes over the shoulder and across the chest. This is called a baldric. In this look, we also used a baldric, choosing one with a large, decorated buckle. Our pirate captain carries a slightly curved sabre, as was common on a ship in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The one thing you must not forget in a pirate captain outfit is a hat. We decided to go for a leather tricorn, the model most associated with pirates today.

Other hat options can be found in our pirate headwear category.

Look 3 - Ranger

The third and final look we have created with the Dublin-trousers is a Ranger look. Think of the character of a loner, who lives in the forest and moves from place to place.

Because the Dublin-trousers is as versatile as it is, it can basically be used for any fantasy character. For a Ranger who moves a lot, it is wise to wear a trousers like the Dublin trousers.

A Ranger, who lives outside society and primarily in the forest, would not have the best-cared-for clothing. This is a detail we wanted to highlight in this look. The tunic we chose features a muted green colour and "unfinished" edges at the neckline, hem, and sleeves. Perfect for a forest dweller.

Over the tunic, we layered a robe-like coat. Like the tunic, the coat looks old and worn. Layering is a wonderful way to pave our way to a specific character.

Our Ranger actually wears the same boots as our bard, but they feel different here because the whole look is just as different. High, comfortable boots fit perfectly with ranger looks.

To prevent the coat from moving too much and getting stuck, we had our Ranger wear a belt over the coat. To this belt, we added a pouch.

We have also added a few fingerless leather gloves. This would be a practical addition for a character like this and makes the look a bit less basic.

A man who wanders through the country and usually lives in forests is most likely an experienced hunter. Otherwise, he would have a bit of a problem. The favorite hunting weapon of our wanderer is a bow. A hand-bow would be impractical in wooded areas, so we used a recurvebow. He carries his arrows in a quiver on his back. The quiver can also be worn on a belt.
