Tips for starting a fire

Throughout history, there have been various methods for starting a fire. One method used in many different time periods was using a flint and a fire striker.

What do you need?

-flint

-fire striker

-char cloth or wax cloth

-jute rope

-kindling

How to start a fire with a flint and a fire striker:

Step 1:

Jute rope is made from thinner strands twisted together. Separate these thinner strands and make a bird's nest out of them. This will be your fine tinder.

Step 2:

Place your char cloth or wax cloth on the flint. Ensure it lies exactly on the edge where you will strike with the fire striker. Strike the flint with the fire striker until a spark lands on the char cloth. When this happens, you will see a small red spot on the char cloth. You can make it grow larger by gently blowing on it.

Step 3:

Place the charcoal cloth on the tinder you have made and fold it loosely around the cloth. The tinder should now start to ignite. You can assist by gently blowing on the starting flame again.

Step 4:

Place the burning tinder in the object that needs to hold the fire, such as a brazier, fire plate, or previously set up fire pit. Add the kindling to the flame to help the fire grow.

Depending on how large a fire you need, you can further feed it with twigs and branches.
