What is the best way to mount a helmet crest?
Some Roman helmets, used by legion soldiers and centurionss, were equipped with a crest mount, on which a helmet crest could be placed. A helmet crest is an ornament of a helmet, usually made of horse hair or plumes.
Some sources suggest that the helmet crests of legion soldiers were mounted in the length and that centurionss had them mounted crosswise.
The crest mount is shaped like a fork. A Roman helmet suitable for mounting a helmet crest has a slot on top of the helmet. The bottom of the crest mount slides into this slot.
The helmet crest is then placed on the crest mount, with the middle prong inserted into the helmet crest. At both ends of the helmet crest is a leather cord. The cords are tied to the small rings attached to the helmet for a secure placement.
